The Bunn B10 is built for speedy brewing. Similar to commercial style coffee makers, the B10 brews a full pot in 3 minutes, but is still compact enough for home use. The Bunn B10 features a stainless steel water
tank reservoir and polished plastic housing. Bunn machines use a unique pour over system that always keeps water at brew temperature. Adding water to the reservoir displaces the heated water in the tank, causing it to exit through
the coffee filter. This function also allows the machine to be used to dispense hot water for tea or hot chocolate by filling the reservoir but not adding coffee to the filter.
Controls:
Simple to use, the Bunn B10 comes with instructions that are essential to its operation. So before you brew your first pot of coffee, fight the urge to just jump in. Spend a few minutes reading; it will make all the difference.
The reason? Brewing the first pot primes the machine for future use, so it's especially important to follow the sequence of steps for filling the 75 oz reservoir and for plugging in the machine.
The first pot will take up to
15 minutes to brew. After that a pot brews in 3 minutes. That's because the Bunn B10 is made to be on all the time, keeping water at the proper brew temperature. If you will be away from the machine for more than 3 days, Bunn
recommends using the vacation switch: a rocker button on the back left side of the machine that shuts off all of the electrical components. After restoring the machine to its ready-to-brew mode, it will take another 15 minutes for
the water in the tank to be heated to brewing temperature.
Shutting the lid to the reservoir begins the brewing process, so you will want to place the carafe on the warming plate before closing it. The lighted button on the
top front of the machine only controls the hot plate. The Bunn B10 can prepare a full pot, or as few as 20 ounces of coffee (the equivalent of four 5 oz. cups) by simply adjusting the amounts of water and coffee you use.
Performance:
The Bunn B10 is a commercial model adapted for home use. Compact and attractive, it is well above average in performance. Once the first brew cycle has been completed, the Bunn B10 brews very quickly. It is especially good if
you are drinking coffee throughout the day and want a pot brewed quickly. The strength of the coffee is solely dependant upon the amount of ground coffee that is added to the filter.
Construction:
Based on Bunn's commercial machines, the B10 retains a minimalist industrial look. The Bunn B10 has a solid polished plastic housing and a stainless steel water tank. The exterior is uncluttered, presenting only one rocker
switch on the front of the machine. Bunn also managed to keep this machine compact despite its ability to hold and heat a full pot of water at all times.
Carafe:
The 50 oz. glass carafe of the Bunn B10 is clearly marked with fluid level indicator lines. It has an easy to grip plastic handle. The carafe's spout is short and somewhat stubby. Despite its appearance, this spout is virtually
spill free.
Boiler:
The Bunn B10 features an 800-watt tank heater. With the first use, the boiler requires up to 15 minutes to heat. After that, the stainless steel boiler maintains the proper temperature and brews coffee in 3 minutes. If the
vacation setting is used, the machine will require an additional 15 minutes to heat the water again when it is turned back on.
Hot Plate:
The warming plate is porcelain coated and scratch resistant. It is easy to clean. The on/off switch for the hot plate is located on the top front of the machine.
Reservoir:
Because it is a fast brewing machine, the Bunn B10's reservoir acts only as a funnel to the boiler. A flip up lid covers the 75-ounce reservoir, which is conveniently placed at the front of the machine where it is very easy to
fill. You don't have to turn or twist your arm as you do when pouring into some reservoirs located at the back or sides of coffee makers. The reservoir serves as a ready mechanism for the Bunn 10 Cup. After you pour water through
the plastic grate that sits atop the reservoir and close the lid, a spring mechanism allows the water to flow into the boiler, starting the brewing cycle. Opening the lid during brewing will interrupt this flow cycle, but not the
brewing.
Water Filtration:
There is no water filtration system. It is always best to filter out chemicals and minerals before the brewing process. This will enhance the coffee flavor as well as helping to keep the internal portions of the machine clean.
If you don't already have a filtration system in your home, try using bottled water or attaching a filter to your tap.
